Movie 10 Cloverfield Lane

I am watcing "10 Cloverfield Lane" now and I've just found out that I could clearly understand what the women (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) says but have a little bit difficulty in understanding the guy (not John Goodman but the guy with arm injury) is saying. Is he speaking with a so-called Southern accent? or it is just my brain tricking on me?
