Move away from the script

Hi,

Let’s say that I have a presentation and a script that echoes the slides in the presentation.

If I don’t stick to the script the whole time and sometimes break away from it, could I use the word ‘diverge’?

I know that I can say ‘shift away’, ‘stray away from’ or ‘go off’, but I’m curious about this one.

“My friend warned me that he might diverge from the script.”

Thank you.
