Moulds or molds

I’m working on a book for early high school learners, and in the same book I am confronted with “mould”.
In one sense, it refers to a cast of something (A plastic mould), and in the other case it refers to the mould that grows on bread.
Can the two be used interchangeably, or is one mold and the other mould, or is it strictly a British/US spelling thing?
