Motivational letter for summer program help

Hi guys, I'm applying for a summer student position, and seek advice on my motivational letter. I am not a native English speaker. Please recommend any changes I can do to make this more fluent. Thanks!

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to apply for the CERN xxxxx xxxx programme. I saw the position opening on my school’s forum. My preferred areas of work are Cloud Computing and Multithreaded Programming, in this particular order.

I originally heard for this programme in 2012, when I was in the second year of my studies. However, I quickly came to the realization that I was too young for this programme. Later, this year, when I found this position once again, I knew I was ready and rushed to apply.

Since my high school years I remember loving physics, later being fascinated by high energy interactions and other topics that were not covered in the school's curriculum. At the last year of high school, I took part in the first and second stages of the National Physics Competition. I maintained my passion through my college years by helping my younger siblings understand, and not only finish, their physics homework– among others.

I learned a lot by watching the experiments conducted at your facility reveal many of the world’s inner workings. I had always wanted to visit CERN and be at the birthplace of the Web and near the LHC experiment, where I could meet bright scientists and students from all over the world.

Inspired by influential services like Dropbox, or the greek Okeanos (a cloud based virtual machine service), I am eager to take part in software projects that intent to replace conventional systems with cloud based ones and also watch how this technology applies to CERN's demands. Furthermore, I became interested in CPU and GPU parallelization from my current studies and through own experimentation with improving traditional 3D rendering techniques such as raytracing and raymarching. Many of the open source projects I follow use parallel programming to their advantage, but I can imagine that for a large scale and critical application like yours, engineering a reliable solution involving multithreading can make a tremendous difference.

I have enough programming and problem-solving experience from various personal projects and school assignments. Through those, I developed not only my ability to work and cooperate effectively in groups with like-minded people, but also the courage and motivation to work hard in completing a project solo. My academic experience has made me able to quickly grasp new concepts with great ease and constantly look for new opportunities to expand my knowledge.

I look forward to your response to my interest in this programme. Thank you for considering my application.

Best regards,
xxx xxxxx
