Dear All,

First of all, I would like to thank you for the time you put into reading our essays, I am sure it helped out many people here. I received an offer from university and now I would like to apply for scholarship.

Could you please take a look at the structure of my essay? Please comment, whether it corresponds with the following points:

academic merit;

what you expect to gain from the course you are taking; and

what you intend to do after completing the course.

Thank you so much in advance!!!

Dear Scholarship Committee,

I am writing to apply for International Postgraduate Scholarship at ABC University at MSc Accounting and Finance Program.

I come from a small city in a subsidized region in Siberia. My parents, both well-educated, intelligent, respected engineers, always told me that the wisest investment is in one’s education. When I was a child, they have done everything to instill a thirst for knowledge in me and cultivate the feeling of the urgency of accomplishment. After USSR collapsed, could no longer afford personal tutors and private schooling, as our income has dramatically changed. What remained untouched is my desire to accumulate knowledge and to receive the best education. That crisis stroke me and I realized that I had no choice but to prove to everyone that I can become successful using my efforts. In 2008 I found myself on the threshold of something exciting: I became a finalist of Future Leaders Exchange program, which enabled me to spend an academic year in the USA. During that year, I was receiving a living allowance and carrying out all kinds of voluntary work. In the last year of school, I was awarded a governor’s scholarship based on academic merit. Then, one of the top universities in Russia accepted me with a monthly stipend. My parents were not able to make any contributions to maintain my enrollment. To have some savings upon graduation, at the end of the third year I took up a job of Customer Service Manager at British company. Although I worked night shifts, I still managed to be one of the best students on the course. This title was proved when I obtained the Chinese Government Scholarship, which made it possible for me take another bite of a foreign culture - to study the Chinese language in Beijing.

My major of International Relations in Nuclear Sphere also facilitated my interest in finance. With such modules as differential and integral calculus, mathematical analysis, nuclear physics, business process modeling, various methods of analysis, it introduced me to the world I had not known before: world of numbers. Not only this environment enhanced my analytical aptitude and revealed my good problem-solving skills, but also uncovered my passion for quantitative fields of study. As soon as I realized it, I started educating myself by reading books and professional literature as Reuters training books, The Financial Times, The Economist, and studying business cases.

After graduation, I intended to land myself a job in one of the consulting firms Ernst and Young. I supposed that mathematical background is an excellent pathway to business and finance. Although I successfully passed all numerical and verbal tests, I was not hired due to the lack of specific competencies required by the industry.

I am sure that joining the course of Accounting and Finance at Kingston University will serve as a springboard for my professional development. I am particularly interested in Financial Accounting and Financial Management, Corporate Finance and Financial Statement Analysis, International Money and Finance, Financial Modelling, and Auditing because these modules will give me an insight into the financial decision-making process, financial and audit tools and fundamentals. Practical program with up-to-date information, exposure to top career services, and guidance of experienced mentors, who have built their own successful careers, will allow me to keep track of crucial events that drive financial market, develop my network of international contacts and provide me with a solid foundation for my career in professional services.

I enjoy working in a dynamic environment that can offer challenging assignments, mobility across geographical boundaries, and the opportunity to make an impact on client’s business, that is why I feel that consulting perfectly fits my aspirations. The sector I prefer to work at is a business performance improvement. In two years, I will get a significant knowledge of various industries, and in five years, my objective is to become a project manager with a holistic perspective of a certain industry, knowledge of how to steer an organization as a whole and influence business units.

Eventually, after gaining this invaluable experience, eventually, I will be able to set up my own business. In the process of my application, I discovered that neither Russian government nor banks provide financial support for education abroad, and my goal is to establish a company that makes it possible for talented young people to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate programs abroad by offering loans at rather reasonable interest rate.

I was honored to receive an offer from your university, however, considering the economic situation in Russia, I am not able to fully finance my studies. The scholarship will help me to ease off the financial burden. If I receive a scholarship, I will continue to apply same diligence, continuing to make education my top priority.
