Motivational letter for position as a teaching assistant

Hello Emotion: smile

This is my attempt at a motivational letter for a position as a teaching assistant of German language at an independant co-educational school in England. Application instructions say that I should write a statement in English and in German each on why I want to go the school and why I feel I am a good candidate. All and any help would be greatly apperciated!

Thanks.
Dear xxx,

I am writing to apply for the position of an assistant teacher at the xxx School in xxx starting September 2012. Although I am merely a first year Bachelor student of English Philology and German as a Foreign Language Philology at Heidelberg University, I am confident my knowledge of theories of and experience in teaching that I have acquired in the course of my first degree would make me a valuable addition to the school German Department.

My reasons to apply for this position are manifold, but all of them can be traced back to the fact that this incredible opportunity to teach German in Great Britain would allow me to combine my love for the German language with my love of everything English – I would be developing further pedagogical skills and promoting knowledge of Germany and its language at the same time as, to quote xxx, “sleeping, eating, breathing English”[1]. That has been a big ambition of mine for many years now – one I had been able to partially satisfy when I was selected as an Erasmus exchange student to go Middlesex University in London, which allowed me to experience firsthand British traditions and customs, the interactional dynamics, the sense of humour and the legendary weather I had heard about so much. I greatly enjoyed that phase of my life and have since then been looking for an opportunity to go back to Great Britain, as that short stay on British soil was not enough to satisfy my curiosity.

I owe my enthusiasm for English and German to two great teachers who influenced my view of both languages during childhood. A lecturer at the University of Kharkiv taught me English, she opened the door to the world of English literature to me – I started with works by Enid Blyton and Arthur Conan Doyle, some years later I moved on to Tolkien and Jane Austen, and today I greatly enjoy reading Shakespeare. German I learned from many different teachers, but the most prominent one is my father who motivated me to read Thomas Mann and Goethe, thus igniting a curiosity and fascination with the language that burns more brightly the more I study it. These two people shaped my understanding of what it means to be a great teacher – motivated and dedicated, passionate about and knowledgeable in their fields of study, always curious and open to learning of new things. This is what I aspire to be like as a teacher – to be a person who motivates others through their own enthusiasm.

My passion for teaching German as a foreign language, however, is relatively new. It developed quietly over the years as I completed internships at schools and participated in various lectures: During a teaching practice at the xxx I was assigned to prepare ninth graders, among them migrant children, for their exams and had a lot of fun devising exercises and practising essay writing with them. Some months after that I heard about an additional qualification by the name of ‘German as a Foreign Language’ that was offered at the Heidelberg University of Education. I attended the seminar and enjoyed learning about different aspects of methodology and didactics and was intrigued. Finally, during the teaching practice in Lithuania where I only taught German as a foreign language I realised that that was what I wanted to do with my life.

The position of an assistant teacher at the Oakham School would be an important milestone in my career. I am positive that my international background and interdisciplinary education would enrich the teaching atmosphere.

Thank you for considering my application and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Lusjana xxx
