Motivational letter for PhD

Hello everyone. please check my motivation letter for PhD position.

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing to express my interest in applying for the PhD in x at the y university in the Netherlands.

In 2012, I completed my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the Cardiff University (UK). During my final year of undergraduate studies, I started growing interest in the geotechnical field and later went to Newcastle University (UK) and completed my Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering in 2013. Whilst doing masters, I obtained in-depth knowledge in key geotechnical sectors i.e., slope stability, ground vibrations, ground improvements, foundation design and soil mechanics. Being a curious and research active student helped to work on the thesis project which is based on finite element modeling of the effect of ground vibration in railway embankment induced by high-speed rail.

Obtaining a master degree in geotechnical engineering clearly shows my interests in geotechnical sectors like slope stability, ground vibration, mitigations and preventions of geotechnical hazards. I would consider it a privilege to do my doctoral thesis on data monitoring to improve slope reliability at a renowned research facility like Y UNIVERSITY. I believe that it will be an important stone to my future research career.

Currently, I am working as a lecturer of Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at North South University, Bangladesh. Prior joining as a faculty member, I worked as a consultant engineer in England, Bangladesh, and Australia. During this time, I learned a lot about geotechnical analysis, field investigations, numerical modeling, slope stability, foundation design, ground movement and about working with people from different countries, cultures, and disciplines. While working as an engineer I always spend hours to research and try to find out of the box solutions to solve any problems. Which later led to shifting my career from a consulting engineer to an academician.

Carrying out application based research and pursuing PhD is currently my top priority. The main area of research interest is in the ground movement, ground vibration, and slope stability. The similarity between the major attributes of this PhD topic and my research interest is the main motivation to apply for this PhD position. Assessing slope reliability using modern monitoring technology like drones and in-situ sensing equipment to improve the stability of slope and prevent unwanted hazards is very interesting and fascinating topic to research. Additionally, the possibility to take part in interdisciplinary research, the opportunities for training and the idea of continuously developing new skills and gaining experience are also a big motivation to apply for this position.

The career advancement opportunities that I will have through all these opportunities are something I see as an important asset to my research career. Being a keen learner and a science enthusiast, I believe working in a challenging and interesting research project like this will surely improve my potential and help me to become a successful researcher in my career.

I do believe my diverse and dynamic professional and academic background has endowed me with a strong platform to perform research activity independently and make a positive contribution as a PhD student at Y UNIVERSITY.

Yours sincerely

Md. Tousif Rahman
