Motivational letter for BA

Hello, could anyone check my letter for inconsistencies?

I wish to study sound in the context of the digital and sonic arts. I have taken a particular interest in the various modular environments and programming languages available to us nowadays. The myriad ways to approach the creation of sound through these methods inspire me greatly.
It all started with a few CDs from Brian Eno. Gradually, I developed a considerable melomania, and artists like Craig Taborn, Olivier Messiaen and Iannis Xenakis expanded my view on what musical sound can be. After a while I discovered various MaxMSP and Pure Data user communities which provided me with an incredible example of how collective effort and collaboration can effect the way we interact with sound. And at that point I understood that this world of technologically adept artists is the one I want to be a part of.

I used to study in an art school from which I dropped out eventually due to my life going south. I had to start supporting myself, a lot of things were in blur. That moment in my life taught me the significance of perseverance and opportunities in life. And during that time of momentary confusion I discovered sound synthesis. I only played the bass until then, so I learned to play the keyboard. I used stay up night after night absorbing knowledge. Reading up on all of the various common types of synthesis, music theory and experimenting in Ableton. I’ve experimented with DIY electronics, circuitbent a soviet toy organ, and learned to use analog gear. Recently, though, I’ve relied solely on digital modular synthesisers. Specifically, software from Madrona Labs. For a time now I’ve been taking advantage of various generative approaches to composition.
I’ve worked on sound design for a number of various projects. I did sound design for a theatre play directed by Rimini Protokoll. It was an illuminating experience for me as it was of a rather large scale (it held one hundred actors on stage) and it taught me the importance of teamwork and communication. During the past few years I’ve indulged myself in self-driven studies of the many existing means of expression in sound design. I’ve found it a rewarding world of possibilities.
I have also decided to retake the high school mathematics exam to better represent my current knowledge on the subject.

Growing up with my three brothers and sister I learned the value of peer diversity, and I’ve become quite adaptive, hence I would cherish the opportunity to study amongst students and mentors from all over the world. My thirst for knowledge has granted me an analytical and open mind. I like to read anything from classics like Ryunosuke Akutagawa and Arthur C. Clarke to modern writers like Thomas Pynchon. I like to play old CRPGs. I love technology. And despite the arising social issues, I still appreciate the many wonders of this age. I have always felt sound as a fundamental force that has the power to connect directly to the core of our beings. This notion has helped me shape the way I think and perceive this world. During the course I aim to improve my ability to contextualise my work and broaden my scope on sound both as an art form and as a subject of scientific research. Given that I am admitted, I hope to pave my first step in a successful longterm academic path. My goal is to prove my devotion to sound art and contribute to this field.

thanks in advance,
janis
