Motivational letter

Please I am applying to do a postgraduate degree and i will be glad if you could please go through my letter for me, and the necessary corrections. Find bellow my letter . Hope to hear from you.

Growing inequities in the world’s system and many facets of human endeavour in the wake of globalisation has made the issue of social justice and equity very significant and urgent in the international community’s bit to alleviate poverty, hunger, and a host of socio-economic and political problems triggered by social injustice and inequality.

My undergraduate degree in Development Studies at the University for Development Studies-Ghana, offered me the opportunity to spend six months in rural communities, working to understand and appreciate rural living, collect and analyse data, and develop strategies for improving the living conditions of communities in a participatory manner. During this period, I recognized my strength in the field of community development. Through my student field work, I realized I had the empathy for poor, socially challenged or deprived communities, and inadvertently become outraged with policy makers when I visit underprivileged communities, and passionately want to do something to improve the situation. I therefore feel good whenever I assist communities initiate and undertake development projects. As the team leader for my group, I spearheaded various community development initiatives, like water, and education.

I turned down an offer to work in the bank and chose to work as a Community Development Facilitator for a non governmental organisation, Government Accountability Improves Trust (GAIT II) Program, working to increase community advocacy through Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and also to assist communities to mobilize resources for community development. This further exposed me to diverse issues of development and livelihood improvement of poor rural communities. Taking up the position of Program Officer for Sogtaba Advocacy Network in a region where poverty is comparatively the highest in Ghana, and where women and other vulnerable groups, barely have a voice, gave me the greatest motivation to strive to bring social justice and equity to deprived and poor people living in communities that virtually lack basic human necessities like potable water.

My experience with community development and advocacy has made me realize the need to assist and resource the disadvantaged to make choices about their own future, and to take collective responsibility for, and control of, the way in which their lives are organised. This can be achieved by supporting the development of civil society or community based organisations in communities affected by social injustices to self-advocate and leverage support for change. Generally, many parties-usually the poor and disadvantaged are excluded from defining their needs, or actively involved in policy making.

The experience motivates me to pursue a Course in Social justice and Equity Studies, for it is my greatest desire to acquire knowledge and experience that will enable me significantly and effectively help initiate, develop, and manage development programmes that will positively impact the lives of people living in underprivileged communities. I aspire to establish an advocacy organisation that will give training and empower local civil society organisations and community based organisations to advocate for their rights and demand social justice and equity in their communities. This I believe will extensively help to reduce poverty and inequity in deprived communities.
