MOTIVATIONAL ESSAY FOR A MASTERS PROGRAM
I am honored to have this opportunity to introduce myself and to show, through my past experiences, my reason for applying for the Master program in Life Science Economics and Policy offered in your institution. With my educational background and working experience, I strongly believe that I am qualified for the program and I hope I can convince you too. My interest in Life Science Economics and Policy and my decision to further my education in this field is as a result of my deep-seated passion for the application of Economics in Natural Sciences. In my college days, I loved and excelled in this field especially biology and economics; participating in inter-school and intra-school competitions and obtaining B2 and B3 grades for those two subjects in my Senior School Examination Certificates. In spite of the two Admission offers given to me by two different departments for my undergraduate study: Zoology and Applied Microbiology, I knew where my interests lay and I pursued it vigorously with excellence in mind. During my undergraduate study, as a student finding my bearing in a new environment, I stumbled in some of my first year courses but I didn’t let that derail me from my goal and dream of being an applied scientist. In due course, I was fully exposed to a wide range of specialties in medicine, environment, biotechnology, public health, food production, conservation and ecology; business management and policy in the various courses I offered such as Industrial, Food, Environmental and Soil Microbiology, Microbial Plant Pathology, as well as techniques in Microbial Technology and Microbial Ecology. These courses strengthened me and equipped me with the fundamental baseline necessary for my success as a scientist. My attendance and participation in seminars, group presentations, discussions, assignments and excursions provided me with an encompassing view of the environment we live in and what can be achieved through proper practices, both scientific and administrative. My internship at the Nigerian Bottling Company (Coca Cola, Nigeria) was an outstanding learning platform that helped me hone my skills as a scientist and a manager. I was put in charge of the microbiology laboratory where I managed and learned complex analytical techniques, running analysis on finished products, raw materials and production lines. In addition, my unpublished research project in Microorganisms involved in Leather Degradation and my seminar presentation on the Physical Agents of Microbial Death and Control developed my skills as a scientist and most especially, a researcher.
My interest in the application of economics and public policy to the area of Life sciences was further deepened during my One year National Youth Service Programme in my country where I served as the Personal /Technical Assistant to the Director, Ports Inspection Directorate of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC); A regulatory government Agency tasked with food, drugs, chemicals and raw material regulation and control and also, with making regulatory policies relating to the public health and consumption. I was exposed to the instruments of government policies and their socio-economic impact in the country especially in food and drug control. As the Technical Assistant, I participated actively in policy meetings with the Director, Head of Sections and other Regulatory officers in which regulatory issues on Import, Export, laboratory analysis of food, chemicals, drugs and raw materials and their conformity to World Health Organization (WHO) standards were discussed and debated. I was exposed to the control processes involved in government policy analysis and implementation. Training sessions, presentations, interaction with stakeholders in the public sector and most especially, the consultative workshop on the Export of NAFDAC regulated products in my country, empowered and helped me to acquire an edge in policy evaluation. After my National youth service programme, my ravenous interest in economics and public policy propelled me to enroll for a Master’s program in Public Administration. I completed courses in Policy Analysis and Implementation, Strategic Management, Business Ethics and Corporate Governance, Public Administration Law, Public Financial Management among others, with excellent scores; and my thesis on the Contributions of Organized civil societies to Governance and Policy Formulation in my country with the view of achieving the developmental goals in Health, Education and Poverty Eradication helped me in acquiring the knowledge and foundation I need to excel as a scientific administrator and technocrat in the public sector. Challenges in hunger control, climate change, conservation and environmental degradation are problems mostly keenly felt in developing countries like mine and I believe that sustainable solutions are the only way to combat these issues and promote development. As a result, regulatory policies for Food, Environment and Biotechnology should be sound, strongly rooted and diverse in its reach for a sustainable and achievable economic growth and the solution to this lies in designing and evaluating the process of policy-making and implementation with its impact in the country. I chose to study Life science Economics and Policy at Technische Universität München because its multidisciplinary curriculum deals fully with Sustainable Development Economics and Policy, the key area I wish to specialize in. As the best German university for Life and Agricultural science according to ARWU and the first german university of excellence according to Shanghai Ranking in 2012, I believe that TUM’s numerous student initiatives and state-of-the-art facilities, is the best place for me to acquire knowledge and an integrated learning experience. Furthermore, the proximity of TUM’s Center of Life and Food Sciences to key research and government facilities such as the State Department for Agriculture, Central Institute for Nutrition and Food Research, Center for Biotechnology and the Hans Eisenmann Center for Agrarian Sciences, provides the perfect arena for me to gain knowledge that is diverse and highly technical in Agrarian, Food, Environmental and biotechnological issues. Also, course such as Regulatory economics and Policy, Consumer economics and policy and International Commodity markets and Trade Policy will aid me when analyzing regulatory problems keeping in view, its socio-economic impact in my country and in the international terrain. Experts in fields of Development Economics (Mathias Blum), Sub Saharan African Poverty Alleviation (Emmanuel Benjamin) Macroeconomics (Qiangian Shao), Micro-credit and Poverty Reduction in developing countries (Kim Anh Bui) are a few amongst a vast and diverse faculty that will impact me immensely in my quest to become a Regulatory and Policy specialist. It is my strong conviction that the balance between the core courses, elective courses and the extracurricular activities present at TUM and reflected in the training methods and field activities available, will provide the perfect setting for me to gain a diverse multi-cultural experience. My visit to Germany in 2012, showed me the diversely rich cultural heritage of the country and a brief study of its system of government have shown me that several of its development and regulatory policies can be imitated or emulated by my country. My discussions with past students and Alumni have left me without doubt that I will acquire, through the Life science Economics and Policy program, the knowledge necessary to fully understand the integration of economics in life science policy-making for my country.
In addition to my work experience and educational qualification, I also possess exceptional interpersonal and leadership ability as portrayed in my position as the former Vice President for Education and Drama Community development group during my one year National Youth Service Programme. My team and I embarked on various educational projects that benefited children and the community at large. I currently work for the West African Examinations Council in my country and I am a UN Online Volunteer currently working on some projects with various team mates from around the world on Development in Africa. I also possess excellent research writing abilities and superb command of English as it is the official language of my country. I am sure that I will be an added asset to your program with my international interdisciplinary educational and work background.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to studying in your highly esteemed institution under the tutelage of the exceptional Research associates at the center of Life and Food Sciences, Weihenstephan.

I have visited Germany, but have not studied there. I am an American. I live in the USA. If you have specific questions, start a new thread. This thread is a discussion with a Nigerian student. It is impolite to interrupt another person's conversation.
