Hello. I am a recent high school graduate applying to a university in Netherlands for a degree in astronomy.
This is the first draft of my motivation letter, and also the first time I am writing one, so I would really appreciate any and all advice.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am applying to your Bachelor’s program of Astronomy starting in September 2017. My career ambition is to become a research scientist.
I have graduated high school with math and physics as my core subjects. Throughout my education I have demonstrated good academic knowledge and am expected to graduate with an average score of 94%.
My first encounter with astronomy was a workshop held by a senior in my first year of high school. Prior to this, my only knowledge in the subject was regarding the constellations and the mythology behind them. The workshop had piqued my interest on the subject and I went on to take two online courses on astronomy. Soon, I was so encompassed by my love for the subject that I, along with two of my friends, conducted a workshop for our juniors. The topics included where the big bang, the expansion of the universe and also discussed the science behind many sci-fi movies. The workshop was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and it was in that moment that I decided that this was the field I wanted to pursue.
While my academic career is vitally important to me, so are my extracurricular activities. In my school I have held many leadership positions such as Deputy President Social Welfare and President of Environmental Activities. My involvement in the math club has groomed me as a team player and increased my interpersonal skills. I enjoy puzzle solving and have yearly taken part in competitions like chess, kenken and Sudoku. I have a range of interests, including, but not limited to, basketball, fashion designing and jewelry making, and mime.
I want to study at the University of Groningen because of its outstanding educational system and excellent facilities. The fact that the university has its own observatory is an obvious bonus. I am also interested in your institutes’ collaborations with other astronomical foundations. I specially appreciate the wide range of modules offered in your course since there is no equivalent at my country of residence.
Given my past history of commitment to excellence, I am confident that I will bring a high level of energy and enthusiasm to your program.
Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to your acceptance.
Sincerely yours,
Nidhi Bangera
