Motivation letter - research PhD

Hello Everyone!!!

I want to apply for PhD program and I'm struggling with the motivation letter.
I've read so much information and guides that on the end I feel totally lost.
I wrote first draft and I would be very grateful for any advice on that.

Many thanks !

Dear Application Committee,

Purpose of my letter is to apply for the PhD program carried by the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Cardio-Metabolic Immunotherapy starting in the autumn 2013. I see this program as an important step toward my future carrier as a researcher.

I have a strong education and research background that give me foundation from which from which I will grow into an excellent researcher in your program. I started my higher education at the University of XXX where I obtained my Biotechnology Bachelor’s degree. At this time, I made the decision that I want to become a scientist. I wanted to focus on fundamental studies in the medical field what required changing my place of study. After being successful on a difficult admission test I was accepted at XXX University which is top university in my country. There I joined the team in the Department of Cell Biology where in 2013 I defended my thesis with the highest grade and graduated with Master’s degree in Biotechnology.

While working on my Master’s thesis, I was a part of a team cooperating with the hospital to study molecular background of fibrotic changes in development of asthma. This experience provided me with the opportunity to develop skills in variety of laboratory techniques. Operating within an interdisciplinary research group with difficulty experimental model helped me to develop a general work ethic that allows me to prepare and manage my lab work very effectively. As a part of my professional training I have spent two months in hospital laboratory. During that time I have learned how to prepare patients samples to biochemical, serological and microbiological analyse. I was also responsible for registration and management of results in the hospital network what helped me to improve my organizing skills.

In addition to my scientific research experience, I was also fortunate to be a part of Yale’s Bioethics Program where I was attending seminars, lectures and I took a part in public debate. Active participation in variety of discussions gave me the chance to improve my problem solving skills and creative thinking. Being a part of international, diverse group of people with different backgrounds showed me the importance of engaging in academic discussion. It helped me to learn that I can never come up with every possible idea myself, so working as a team is of the upmost importance.

There are two primary reasons why I want to be a part of your program. First, the focus in your lab is on pathogenesis of cardio-metabolic diseases with the goal of potential treatment. That is exactly what I would like to engage myself in. Studying the molecular background of illness is what ignites my curiosity the most. Second, it is very important to me to be a part of dynamic and ambitious team. I want to work on my PhD in international, diverse setting and that is what your lab is offers. I am confident that my interdisciplinary background will provide new valuable contribution to your research team.
I have attached my Curriculum Vitae together with contact details of two referees. I welcome the opportunity for a personal meeting to discuss my qualifications. In case of any questions feel free to contact me. I will be happy to provide you with any further information. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Faithfully,
