All candidates must write a letter of motivation. Please provide good arguments about why you want to do this master's programme at Maastricht University and why you believe that you can successfully complete the programme.
Dear Sir/Madam,
In this motivation letter, I would like to outline my personal reasons and goals, which determine my interest to pursue a master degree in Global Supply Chain Management and Change in the University of Maastricht.
My professional and educational background have allowed me to develop organizational skills to cope simultaneously with intensive working and/or studying schedule. For instance, I have studied French language around two years during the weekends, while working as an accountant. I feel comfortable and enjoy cooperating with people, having different perspectives and values. Accordingly, I have preferred to work in transnational corporations and use every possibility to study or work abroad. My colleagues have always noted that I possess analytical skills and willingness to execute tasks at work. I am curious and willing to know beyond my personal duties. During my childhood, I was encouraged by my parents to form and express an independent opinion on different topics, respect others’ points of view and always consider the emotional statement and needs of people. Subsequently, I implemented the same principles in my behavior at work. I believe that all these personal treats makes me able to face the challenges in the international and comprehensive master program in Supply Chain in Venlo.
While occupying my last two positions, I had the chance to support a supply chain team and to experience the mode of work and some of the responsibilities involved in the supply chain process. When I was working at Coca-Cola Enterprise, I often initiated conference calls and meetings at work to acquire further information on processes and issues. What was intriguing to me was the complexity within the supply chain, more precisely, be aware of the big picture and at the same time keep track of all the relevant information in order to prepare and present an adequate report or an analysis. I had to obtain a lot of information and contact many colleagues and teams in different countries in order to prepare forecasts and ensure stock replenishment process is reflected correctly in SAP system. Thus, I learnt valuable knowledge about business practices and interdependence between different departments. I was fascinated by the possibility to change and influence the organization, to create value and constantly discover insights about the process of work. Consequently, I figure out that forecasting, revenue management and mitigating risk within the supply chain are the areas in which I would like to direct my career path. After several months of research of Internet, questioning students, graduates and student organizations, I narrowed my scope and defined that the program Global Supply Chain Management and Change will assist me in achieving my goals.
Up to now, my responsibilities have been primarily focused on record and presentation of information and partly on forecasting and analysis. As I would like to be more involved in analyzing data and in the process of decision-making, I expect that the specialized curriculum of the program will allow me to acquire in depth skills in the area of supply chain analysis. The structure of the program – from methods to application, and the described practical approach appeal to me as I would be able easily to incorporate learnt concepts in my future work. The subjects that mostly capture my attention are the once related to mathematical techniques and approach to leading projects. My purpose is to gain confidence that I am able to interpret correctly information, linking supply chain data to financial indicators. I have to highlight that - especially in my home country, the program does not have equivalents so it will make my profile stand out in job competitions. Eventually, I would like to apply the learnt knowledge in promising industries such as pharmacy and airline services, being responsible for optimization strategies, forecasting demands, and being able to lead projects in the same fields in Europe. I value that the location of the program facilitates students to put in practice their knowledge. The presence of clusters in supply chain fields in Netherlands indicates to me that the most updated methods and technologies are used and I presume that they will be reflected in the course of studies. Additionally, I consider that studying in small groups is a strong advantage as I would be able to receive personal feedback and polish my communication skills. My initiative and talkative personality, and ambition to perform well will contribute to my successful performance during the program.
All my close friends, colleagues and family members encourage me to undertake this step in my career growth. I feel mature enough and aware of my strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly – aware of my capabilities and desires. Hence, I have the support and confidence to be valuable participant in the master program Global Supply Chain Management and Change. Now is the right moment in my professional and personal path to complete the master program and Venlo is the right place.
The letter is quite disorganized. I was not able to see a cohesive, logical argument, only a stream of sentences.
