Psychology is a science that has fascinated me for several years already. I have always been interested in human behaviour in different situations, especially in a non-typical environment. Since the human is the most complex and the most unpredictable creature, it interests me even more. It is my wish to help people get rid of their fears and various disorders which interfere with their normal daily life. I have a great interest in S. Freud’s Psychoanalysis and Positive Psychology. I think that these two branches of psychology, if joined, would help solve not only the problems of a single individual but also collective problems occurring among individuals within the group that prevent their development and prosperity. Very often, the environment makes individuals behave in one way or another. I am interested in the mutual relationships between an individual and the members of the group, as well as the strengthening of individual’s resistance to the influence of others. It is necessary to explore the causes of the problem. Since I have developed an interest in psychology in lower secondary school, after starting a secondary education programme, I selected psychology as an elective subject in the 11th grade. With each lesson, my wish to study this subject in greater detail is increasing. Since I made my decision to study this subject I have been determined to choose your country due to the quality of studies offered in your country.
I really wish that each individual experienced happiness among other people and enjoyed life and their time with others. During my school years, I myself have enjoyed participating in activities related to ecology, environmental monitoring and exploration. At school, I have also been interested in environmental protection. I was a member of the club Friends of Nature. We used to conduct research on air and environmental pollution, and organize various events. The most memorable of them was the Earth Day. Moreover, I attended a drama club where I developed self-confidence, learnt how to overcome the audience fear and to control my emotions. I used to and still devote a great deal of my time to sports: I used to attend basketball, football and badminton clubs. These games help you remain focused, organized, and quickly make well-reasoned decisions and always plan your strategy one step ahead. Furthermore, I take part in all seminars held at my school. One seminar has seen the participation of two famous people: one of them was a hotel manager, and the other was a city mayor and politician. Their success stories have helped me develop a strong determination to pursue my goal of becoming a psychologist and not to be afraid to go abroad in pursue of it.
One of my favourite past time activities is reading books, both scientific articles on psychological topics and books on popular psychology. Not all books on my reading list are on academic psychology, more often I read popular psychology books. I read the books by Dale Carnegie, Irving D. Yalom and other psychologists. I try to put the most important statements of each book that I have finished reading to test by observing surrounding people. I like observing the ideas revealed in books in daily school life. If these ideas prove to be right, I feel a need to help people, but I do not have required skills and for this purpose I would like to acquire them during the studies at your university.
In my free time, I like watching psychological films that explore issues relevant to society. I enjoy watching and analyzing possible film endings – what would have happened, if the character had received some assistance or had changed his environment. Although these are just films, the situations depicted in them are very relevant in real life. I also like to spend my time with my friends and to meet new people. It is interesting for me to discuss topical issues and reach a solution that is acceptable to both sides.
I and my mother have a small family business. I help her prepare products for sale and receive my share of profit. This allows me to be independent from my mother and not to ask her for pocket money. In summer, I take care of my brother’s children: one of them is 4, and the other is 1.5 years old. While taking care of them, I have become more responsible, learnt how to interact with small children, and how to calm and console them, when they get injured or sad.
I think that psychology is my vocation. I would like to help people live their lives to full. Studies at your university would improve and strengthen my English language skills (I like to learn languages). Besides my mother tongue, I have been learning English since the second grade, and I started learning Russian in grade six. The study programme in your country is very favourable to students because after lectures students may easily find a job, communicate with people more and get to know them better.
Yours faithfully,
Kristina
