Hello! I am applying for Master's degree and I appreciate if someone could help me with my letter. They require explaination of relevant courses in detail thats why take that paragraph too long. Thanks in advance.
Dear Sir/Madam,
My aim for applying for “XXX” program is to delve into violence that leads ordinary citizens to commit extra-legal violence. I want to explore the potential of individuals resorting to justicia a mano proria, justice in one’s hands, within the realm of ‘monopoly of legitimate violence’. I am appalled by the violent acts committed everyday which are taken for granted in Turkey and I am compelled to initiate change by gaining the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge from the best.
On 1st June 2013, I was in Taksim square to protest against the government’s violent actions towards peaceful demonstrators. I witnessed and faced extreme state violence firsthand on that date. Yet, it was not only the state violence that was exerted upon the protestors, Ali Ismail Korkmaz was beaten to death by several shopkeepers with the help of civilian police during the demonstrations in Gezi protests . Popular justice is not uncommon in Turkey, it has a recurring fashion. What really brought this horrifying violence to my attention was the Ali Ismail Korkmaz case. With his lynching, I am determined to dedicate myself to understand violence other than the state violence by researching the social conditions and dynamics behind these human rights abuses and put my all effort to generate solutions for not only Turkish case but also for extra-legal punishments in Europe, South America, South Asia and Middle East.
As an interdisciplinary student, I have taken different courses from different disciplines and they all contributed to my potential. The courses ‘International Security and Conflict’, ‘Nationalism and Ethnicity’, ‘Political Psychology’ and ‘Foreign Policy’ have significantly contributed to my knowledge about societal relations which shape the lenses through which we make sense of the world. Theories of international security and peace building provided me with the skills to understand the ongoing controversial problems in world politics especially issues regarding humanitarian intervention and responsibility to protect. The theories of nationalism, furthered my intellectual capacity with different theories such as primordialism, instrumentalism and constructivism for explaining ethnic conflict and civil wars. I had the opportunity to have a wider perspective in explaining similar cases such as ethnic conflict based civil wars with these two courses in different perspectives. In my ‘Political Psychology’ course, I studied ‘lynchings’ combining political and psychological theories. As I already had a great interest in psychology, this explanatory course made it possible to aggregate the tools and knowledge of two disciplines together in explaining atrocities and how conflict zones are endangering to human rights abuses. With respect to ‘Foreign Policy’ course, I learnt how diplomatic interactions are engaged which is essential for enforcing an agenda related to human rights abuses and in addition to this, I had the chance to gain knowledge on how international nongovernmental organizations work and how they are unable to be effective under certain circumstances. All of these, encouraged me even more to explore the dynamics behind contemporary violent conflicts so that I take a position to bring about the positive change regarding human rights.
The research project of "The Effect of Syrian Refugees on Turkish Domestic Politics and Foreign Policy" in the supervision of Assist. Prof. Dr. XXX lead me towards taking action since it was a project involving about violent acts in Turkey starting from 2007. As I scanned the news, I observed how human rights abuses are ignored by the state institutions and how conflict zones as in the case of Southeast of Turkey are more prone to extra-legal violence. I had the invaluable experience of learning how to conduct a research from the beginning as I had the responsibility of collecting data by looking into newspapers and coding news about violent acts compromising riots, protests, and civilian. When I was scanning the news, I observed that the increased presence of the excluded groups combined with the compulsion of the hegemonic group to enlarge their field paved the way for extra-legal punishment. For the purpose of the project, I had to get in touch with nongovernmental organizations in Turkey and I witnessed their inefficiency and indifference. In addition to research experience I gained, I recognized the unwillingness of both the state institutions and nongovernmental organizations to scrutinize extra-legal measurements and I dedicate myself to take a stance.
As a highly-motivated, questioning and devoted student, in the long-term, I desire to be a researcher with the theoretical approaches and practical experience that I will gain from XXX program towards ongoing violent actions and human rights. My initial aim is to research hate crimes in Europe since this issue is becoming increasingly crucial regarding contemporary global crises. I would like to propose a connection between popular justice and hate crimes as these conflicts both reflect societal divisions and exclusions that materialize itself in human rights abuses. After achieving this first step, I aim to initiate successful public policies and engage nongovernmental organizations in building an awareness and produce sustainable and plausible solutions regarding extra-legal punishment. I can clearly see that I have the exceptional chance to be involved with internship and case oriented experiences which will expand my abilities on the subject matter of my crux. Since I cannot bear to overlook what is happening in Turkey anymore, it has become an ontological problem for me to go beyond what is taken for granted and I will give all my power to learn, research and initiate solutions.
Thank you for your consideration.
