I need help with this letter as it can only be 600 words maximum but I have definitely gone over the limit. I suppose I need to get rid of unnecessary material and reword what I have written to being strong and direct. I appreciate any help I can get.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am applying to your Master program of Biology with plans to focus primarily on Genetics, Cell Biology and Human Biology starting in the fall semester of October 2013. My career ambition is to attain my doctorate and primarily command my own research focused in Regenerative Medicine, Stem Cell Research, and Human Genetics. I want to be a part of the research which revolutionizes Biology and the medical field by allowing the development of medical technologies which not only helps the individual, but the world as a whole.
In 2004 I was diagnosed with the disease of alcoholism. This disease eliminated my ability to perform academically and severely affected my self-esteem. After barely graduating from high school, I attempted to pursue a community college degree yet failed after one semester due to my alcohol dependency. It wasn't until I moved to a new state and found the program of Alcoholics Anonymous that I quit alcohol all together. For seven years I have remained sober and in those seven years, I have regained my self-confidence and have a Bachelor's Degree to prove it.
It is because of my disease that my passion for Biology and Genetics has developed. I have watched many of my family members and friends suffer from similar addiction problems and have traced it through many generations in my family. I have studied research and presented topics related to alcohol abuse relating to genome wide analysis studies and significant candidate genes. Not only have I been able to apply therapeutic tools to this disease but have also been able to identify key genetic reasoning for a biologic understanding. I am passionate about Biology because science has progressed to a point where long awaited questions can finally be answered.
I have always felt that it is necessary for me to give back to others as I would not be in the place I am today without the mentors and teachers I have had. I have sponsored more than 15 individuals and have helped them find sobriety for themselves. At 22 years old, I served as General Service Representative for my homegroup meeting which I attended every day. My duties were to vote on topics specific for Alcoholics Anonymous in Arizona four times a year in giant conventions of more than 300 attendees across the state. All of this was done while working 30-40 hours a week and going to school full time.
For the majority of living in Arizona I have worked and attended school at the same time. Partially because I feel obligated for making up lost time but also because I feel it is necessary in order to gain skills necessary for the rest of my life. I have been promoted at every job that I have been at and have usually been responsible performing different job related tasks every day. Nearing the end of completion of my two associates degrees, I managed 8-15 people a day and was in charge of the deposition of tens of thousands of dollars per day.
After my transfer to Arizona State University and completion of my general education courses, I focused my elective studies towards Genetics and lab work. Because of this, I have gained more than 30 different techniques focused in Molecular Biology, Immunology, and Cell and Tissue cultures. After obtaining my BSCII training, I was able to work with live viruses in labs and to perform subsequent experiments related to analysis of specific protein functions and immunology. During the last 6 weeks of the semester I worked on my own project focused on the effects of caffeine on cortex and neuroblastoma cells focused in cell biology techniques.
Over the summer of 2013 I will be participating in a internship at the Berlin-Brandeburg Center for Regenerative Therapies working on kidney decellularization and recellularization utilizing stem cells. I want to attend the LMU because they offer classes and academia oriented towards research and lab experience. University-based research will give me the chance to gain the experience necessary to further pursue my academic and career goals.
I have attached all material required for acceptance into the Master's program. Thank you so much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, Anonymous
