Letter Writing

Motivation letter for university of Leuven

Hello everyone, i'm trying to write my motivation letter now...and i'm not sure whether it suppose to be long and contain a lot of information or not.I was told that the motivation letter is not mandatory but still i want to make sure i've got one.My question is: should i write about me taking 2 gap years after high school ?or just write a few words about why i chose their faculty and what are my strong points.
I would really appreciate your help
