Here is my motivation letter, I would like to hear your opinnion or corrections, since I am not a native speaker and I make many mistakes. Thank you!
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to apply for the Master programme Biomedical sciences: Neurobiology, in specific to the track: molecular neuroscience. I am confident that my background, the ability to work under stress and the ambition to finish successfully something I started with on time, will be a good addition to University of Amsterdam. Furthermore, I am not afraid of taking risks.
I moved four years ago to the Netherlands from Finland. In order to be admitted to my Bachelor Biology programme I needed to learn Dutch (NT2-level) in a year. I finished my Dutch classes in 6 months. In addition to Dutch classes, I needed to complete Chemistry courses in Dutch for my programme which I also did successfully in that same year.
During my BSc Biology I have gained some important skills such as working in a molecular lab. I have worked with cell cultures as well. On the second and third year of my BSc I have had projects which involved working with living embryo’s and test animals.
The reason why I want to study neurobiology is my fascination for functioning of the human brain. Two years ago my grandma passed away after a severe stroke. It was for me really difficult to believe that there was so little to do to help a person with a brain damage. It was also then that I realized that our brain is really powerful and fragile at the same. For me it has become an ambition to try to understand the functioning of human brain better.
In biology I have learned that in order to understand brain in health and disease, it is important to understand the underlying mechanisms on the molecular level. Since my biological background I am in specific interested in the cell-to-cell interactions and how that affects the cognition and behavior. In the future I would like to do research in the field of neurobiology on the molecular level and more specifically I would like to focus myself on psychiatric and neurological diseases.
I am aware of the highly competitive demands of this master’s program, however, I am confident that my background, fearless attitude, motivation and ambition to learn more about neurobiology will exceed the requirements. I am sure that my abilities and skills, combined with practical knowledge make me a very good candidate and will add diversity to this master’s degree programme.
