Dear All, first of all I would like to thank you for your assistance to perspective students. All of you do great job! Let God bless you.
As for me, I want to be enrolled to university to earn my Master degree in Cartography. So below is my motivation letter... Thank you in advance. _________________________ I am writing to apply for the Master degree in Cartography program at Technical University of X starting in October 2012. After my review of graduate programs, and consultation with my line manager, GIS (Geographical Information System) operations coordinator, I am confident that your university has an excellent cartography program and that best meets my goals, because I am interested to acquire knowledge in Cartography and focus on Remote sensing.
I set my choice on your program because I am fascinating with possibility to study at three well known European Technical Universities, your outstanding educational system, focus on gathering relevant work experience, and your excellent facilities. With many distinguished scientists as professors, I know that I will gain expert knowledge by combining my practical and specialized education I will gain critical work experience. All these strong positives allow me to study cutting-edge technologies, such as remote sensing, and to pursue my dreams and ambitions. I believe the data that are acquired by earth observation satellites can prove their value for cartographic applications and it has opened up new realms of geographic information for cartographers. Focusing on the visualization tools that could improve the interpretation of remote sensing information further expands the relationship between cartography and remote sensing.
I graduated secondary school with average score 4.55 out of 5 and my favourite subjects were Mathematics, Geometry, Trigonometry, Geography and Computer studies. I always achieved excellent grades, and strived to be the best during my studying. Ever since my adolescence, I have been excited about earth matters. As a result of my endeavour I won state scholarship to get my bachelor degree in Geology of oil and gas. In 20XX defended my graduation project with “excellent” grade and I graduated from XX University with GPA 4.84 out of 5 and ranked among the top three students.
As my first exposure to Cartography was a course Geodesy and Topography basics in my studies; in summer time I had geodesy practical training at former XX university, where I learnt how to use a theodolite and a level, and calculated the parameters obtained with them, i.e. made a district plan, made surveying validation for topographic mapping of a ground on a scale 1:1000, performed stadia surveying with interval on predetermined scale. I was especially impressed that, despite of the advances in technology, there remains much to learn the new technology. After attending other trainings provided by my company, I became acquainted with the fascinating methods of Cartography, GIS and Remote sensing.
Next day after getting the diploma I was offered a job at joint-stock company XXXX as a Specialist in Geology department. But I decided to continue my education and tried myself at XXX training centre. All courses held in the training centre were in English, instructors were from the UK, Iraq, Venezuela, Italy and Canada. At the end of training I felt very confident in multinational environment and acquired valuable knowledge in technical English and knowledge of upstream petroleum operations.
Because of being one of a trainee of good standing I was offered to try on new direction, GIS, on the job training for about five months at Geomatics department of XXX company with GIS team, where I realized that I was like a duck to water. As it chanced I started to learn Cartography and GIS. I work mainly with ArcGIS software and other programs to create and maintain data and maps that can be combined with geographically referenced data. My GIS software relates different types of data such as administrative or political boundaries, land use, land cover, environmental, infrastructure, and transportation networks.
I like in GIS that it is extensively incorporated into scientific studies. For instance, our ecologists study many different aspects of the on the company territory, to learn how various biological and physical factors interact. I enable these scientists to separate major factors, including vegetation, hydrology, surface terrain, soil type, and erosion, to study how their interrelationships influence ecosystems of XX Sea area where my company is operating.
As for my personal skill, complementing my strong academic performance is my advanced skill in leadership and communication. During studying at secondary school, university and training centre I was the team leader responsible for building and leading my group. As the team leader, I was responsible for not only leading the group, but also distributing project assignments and responsibilities as well as governing interpersonal relationships.
Every year on GIS day, in the middle of November, I donate my time to the schoolchildren. My goal is to introduce GIS, share with its possibilities and to explain them excellence of Cartography,GIS and Remote sensing to promote these specialities in my home country, because the children are lack of information about advances of modern Cartography.
I believe that the Cartography master course offered by Technical universities of X, Y and Z program from 2012-2014 is perfectly suits my study interests. In future I will utilize knowledge of them to the highest degree possible and will perform work that makes a difference in my home country.
Given my past history of commitment to excellence, I am confident that I will bring a high level of energy and enthusiasm to your program. I am sure to exceed your expectations, because of both my academic and interpersonal skills as well as the experience gained from my internships, trainings and work experience. I will enrich the program by enabling fellow students and professors to benefit from my ambitious and open nature. Furthermore, my international background and interdisciplinary education will add more diversity to your program.
Please feel free to contact me regarding any questions or concerns you might have. Thank you for reviewing my application, and I look forward to your acceptance.
Sincerely yours,
