Motivation letter for scholarship, chinese language

Hello, I will be pleased if somebody could give me some opinions on my motivation letter. I am applying for a scholarship to study chinese language because I intend to study chinese traditional medicine, so here is what I was able to produced. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanx in advance.

To whom it may concern.

I am applying for the XZY Scholarship. Presently, I am studying final semester on faculty of Medicine in University .... in ...., where I will be soon promoted to doctor of medicine. I believe my chosen profession will enable me to fulfill all of my desires to help others, to continuously expand my knowledge base and skills and to travel the world. I would like to study Chinese language with regard to Chinese medicine. As a medical student I’m totally fascinated by Chinese traditional medicine. Being able to read and speak in Chinese is the key assumption to open up the door to study of Chinese traditional medicine.

Education has always been an important aspect of my life. I have striven for academic excellence, always wishing to make the most of my education. Throughout my life I have participated in extracurricular activities including valuable work and travel experiences. In 2011 I received Erasmus exchange scholarship among 25 students out of 200 and have been chosen to study for fall semester on Faculty of Medicine in Technical University in Munich. I have encountered the whole different system of teaching and studying. Because in my home university in Slovakia is studying more focused on wide theoretical knowledge in contrast studying medicine in Germany brings more of practical approach and students spend significantly more time in hospital with patients. I found it particularly beneficial because it offers me to use my strong theoretical knowledge background in praxis. Plus all of my classes were held in german so I get to improve my german to fluent level. Moreover in the end of my staying I passed the german proficiency exam and obtained B2 certificate from Goethe Institute. In conclusion studying abroad was highly valuable experience and I really enjoyed meeting people from all over the world and finding out about their way of life and how we were all the same in many ways.

In addition to school related activities. I have been doing research for my thesis based on the influence of antidepressants on diabetes mellitus occurrence. I was collecting data for 18 months from patients in the psychiatric clinic. Results from my research was presented on 3th International Student Medical Kongres in "city".

Although education plays a significant role in my life, I am involved with many other activities. After 6th semester I took an gap year to finance my further studies and went to London. I worked roughly 70-80 hours a week (including weekends), spread liberally over 3 jobs. The first was as nanny in family with 3 young girls. My responsibility was helped them every morning get ready for school and drive them there. The second was looking after 2 children afternoons. Since the both of them have suffered from autism, the job had to be taken particularly seriously because such kids required a completely different approach and attitude. Furthermore I worked during weekend as a carer to elderly lady. This kind of job required as well big amount of responsibility, physical and psychical strength as she needed full time assistance since she was lying patient. Besides working I spend what little spare time I have attending an English course which I have successfully accomplished with certificate Level 1 in ESOL. In addition for past 7 years I regularly work 2 to 4 weeks a year for one physically disabled man from Austria, usually he ask me to make a company to him whenever he intend to go away from home to do some traveling. During this period of time I become fully responsible for him 24 hours a day and help him with everything during day and night routine. These job experiences have taught me much about myself and other people. With each situation I’ve come across, where I could rely only on my self and was trusted with others people life, I have built up my self confidence and sense of responsibility. Moreover I’ve met beautiful inspiring people who despite their handicaps loved living their lifes in way that many healthy people doesn’t seems to. With all these experiences I developed the sense of empathy, understanding, esteem and respect to the other people and value of life in general.

Philosophy has taught me to evaluate life and my experience. In opportunity to apply for this scholarship I see great chance to take my studies to different level. Studying Chinese language will enable me immerse my self into library of books and journals and allows verbal communication with teachers and doctors and become a bridge between Chinese and western societies. I thing western and Chinese medicine are not a substitute for each other, but they are often complementary. I believe my background and qualifications would make me a perfect candidate and I would like to thank you in advance for your most favorable consideration.

Sincerely
