Letter Writing

Motivation letter for phd position.

I am trying to pursue a Ph.D. abroad and I have to start from the motivation letter.
Any corrections/ suggestions are more than welcome.
Thank you so much for your help in advance.

Dear Mr. xxx
I am writing to apply for the Ph.D. Position in "theme" at University of ***.
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 2011 with second class honors from University of **, **. During the two final years of my bachelor program, I became fascinated with Marine geology and oceanography, and had the opportunity through my thesis to participate in a marine geophysical survey and start learning to process and interpret both geophysical and oceanographical data. Ever since I had participated in 15 different marine geophysical and oceanographical surveys with a total of 125 days, gaining experience in instrument installation and configuration, data acquisition techniques and systems and in planning and conducting field work.
In 2013 I received a Master of Science degree in Enviromental Oceanography from the same institution and had the opportunity to undertake my master thesis on “***title***” with a cooperation between Laboratory of **** (LM**) (Prof. xxxx, University of xxxx, xxxx) and the xxxx Institute at xxxx (Dr. xxxx, University of xxx, xxx) for the **name* Project. My thesis work led me to become interested in geophysical techniques to study the recent sedimentary processes and mechanisms in order to be able to construct the palaeolandscape and also gave me the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team with people from all over Europe with different backgrounds and cultures.
At the same time, I had the opportunity to assist Prof. xxx on teaching a course for Matlab based software xxx, in “xxxx” workshop, for two consecutive years (2012, 2013). Since this workshop focuses on marine control engineering, signal processing and marine robotics I met, discussed and exchanged ideas with engineering professionals about new technologies and necessities in the field of marine research and became conversant with the most recent standards and technologies for marine remote sensing. Deriving from this experience, in 2013 I fabricated a mount for making a GoPro camera into a drop camera for ground-truthing purposes which was tested and is still used by LM** with success obtaining video footage up to 60m of water depth.
For the last two years I have been working on projects as a research associate for the LM***, University of ***. This position gave me the opportunity to work – among others - on two EU funded projects which led to collaborate with international teams of researchers from different research disciplines. Participating in projects with different objectives and scientific disciplines I was able to broaden my understanding and knowledge on subjects such as the development of submarine canyons and deltas, landslides, sea floor classification techniques, bio-habitat mapping and marine geoarchaeology.
Given my record of high academic achievement, passion for research work and strong interest in experimental sedimentology although I have no experience in the field, I am certain that if given the opportunity I will do my best to exceed your expectations.
Thank you for considering my application and I look forward to your favorable reply.
Yours sincerely,
Xxx
