Motivation Letter for PhD mathematics

Hello everyone!

I would appreciate if You help me to write my motivation letter grammatically correct, since English is not my mother tongue.

I want to apply for a PhD in mathematics and machine learning. Deadline is not given, but I want to apply tomorrow Emotion: smile

Thank you so much !!!!

So here it goes:

Candidacy for a PhD position

Dear Professor …,

Having recently completed a Master of mathematics from "...."University in ".....",Germany, I believe attending a PhD program meets best my career goals and aspirations. On the one hand, I want to deepen my theoretical knowledge I have gained from studies, on the other hand I aim to use advanced mathematical concepts for a wide variety of currently open challenges in applied research and development. An excellent combination of both is offered by PhD program in "department, place" in "city " with the thesis “......”. This motivated me to write the motivation letter for you.

During my studies I specialized in “....” and “...”. While I was working on my master's thesis ".......name of it.......", I learned how to work independently, and it helped me to improve my personal skills of reading scientific papers. I have also completed some courses in other areas of mathematics. Particularly interesting is the seminar "......name of the seminar.....", where I gave a presentation about the structure and application of the ".......". Furthermore, I completed the lectures "......." and ".......", which gave me an overview of the encryption and decryption of data and the problem of digital signatures and authentication using mathematical concepts. A year ago, in the lecture "........", I familiarized with the subjects "......." and "........." using methods from machine learning. During my undergraduate studies in University of Vienna I took courses in “............,............courses,......”. As you may have gathered from this paragraph, I have developed a keen interest in a variety of subjects in different fields.

Prior to getting my master’s degree, I had an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in some companies and institutions in Germany. During my two years as a tutor at the "...."-University, I learned to make mathematical concepts understandable and to present myself confidently. This experience gave me an access to insight into work at a university, gave me valuable feedback about my teaching and communication skills and refreshed and strengthened my basic mathematical knowledge in Analysis and linear Algebra too. In a one-year internship at "company_name" in the departments "...." and "....." I gained experience in the areas of programming, Data Analysis and Big Data. During the first half of the internship, I was able to support the "....." team in the selecting process of the data and analyzing it. While I was able to prove my ability to work in a team, I also was able to develop my ability to work independently. My tasks in the "......" department included the development of test methods and the application of test automation methods.

During my employment at “.........”, my technical understanding was enhanced by tasks such as the processing of test data by "application_name"-Test implemented test-scenarios and analysis of the result using statistical methods. One of my achievement in the department was, that I created a script, which automated the test process as efficiently and quickly as possible by sending request through the "....." program and switch off and on the features needed for a proper test station functionality. The challenges faced during this internship have helped me to develop and improve my problem-solving skills and critical thinking ability. It sharpened my knowledge about algorithms and technologies.

Maybe with a look at my grades you see more of an average student in me. However, one thing that differs from others is my self-motivation, determination and willpower. Above all, I was able to prove the last point by moving to Europe at age 18 from a rural area of ....country_name..... and the success achieved up to now. Living in Austria and Germany I had to finance my studies all by myself. In Germany I received a full 36-months scholarship in the first three years. This scholarship opportunity gave me an extraordinary opportunity to interact with students and scholars from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds. I developed my intercultural skills, as well as expand my networks and ideas and perspective to diverse global problems. In May 2020 I started my volunteer engagement in a non-profit organization “..........name_of_it......” as a tutor for German language and mathematics for children with a war background and to immigrant families in "city". Here I was able to connect mathematics with something useful for society.

My international background, deep concern in computational sciences and mathematics with the opportunity to work on exciting topics and willingness to make a progress, combined with practical knowledge would serve me well on your department and will add diversity to this PhD program. I accept challenges with open arms, keep a cool head under pressure and work in a structured and analytical way towards a suitable solution.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my candidacy. I look forward to discussing my qualifications and the PhD position in more detail.

Yours sincerely,

"with or with ought signature?"

first last name, MSc
