Dear Sir/Madam,

First of all let me introduce myself, I am ____________ and recently (January 2011) I passed in MSc in Biomedical Engineering from _________ University.

The main objective of the course was to provide a multidisciplinary masters level postgraduate training in the field of biomedical engineering. My decision to pursue postgraduate studies in Biomedical Engineering was the natural culmination of my undergraduate coursework in Biomedical Instrumentation. Also, I wanted to broaden my horizons and gain relevant exposure in the field of Biomedical engineering. It is a fast growing area with tremendous potential for research and also an increasing number of applications in today's world of medicine and technology.

The major area of study during the course was Biomedical Signal Processing & Analyzing, Physiological Measurement, Introduction of Medical Imaging, Medical Equipment & Technology Services Management, and Medical Device Design Principles as compulsory modules. Additionally I selected Nanomagnetics in Nanomedicine, Biomechanics, Bioreactors and Growth Environment, Biomaterials as my elective modules and also attended lectures on Biosensors.

My graduation project and thesis was on “______________”. The main goal of this project is __________________________________________________________.

I completed my undergraduate education in Biomedical Engineering from ________. I have consistently ranked in the top 5% of the students of my class and successfully completed with a overall CGPA of 8.66 (can be considered equivalent to 86.6%). During the four years of my undergraduate studies I gained a basic understanding of various fields in Biomedical Instrumentation mainly Medical Image Processing, Biomaterials and artificial organs, Human assist Devices, Radiological and Biomedical Equipment. My final year project was “To develop in shoe pressure measurement system for use in a clinical environment.” A shoe to be worn by diabetic patients, which has sensors placed at areas where the excess pressure is thought to be causing foot ulceration in the patient’s foot. A sensing circuit triggers an alarm when the force in these regions exceed certain threshold values, at that point the patient can remove the shoe to prevent the damage to the foot.

I look forward to a career in committed research where I can not only use my academic background to achieve my research goals but also make original scientific contributions to my field of interest.

My strengths are a strong academic background, sense of teamwork, integrity and ability to put in sustained quality effort consistently. It is my desire to have a mutually beneficial association with your University and to contribute my best to the field of Biomedical engineering. I am aware that _____ University has high standards for admitting students to its PhD programs. I believe that my academic credentials together with my research interests and potential would help me gain this PhD position at _____ University. I hope that on reviewing my application package, the University would be convinced of the same.

Yours Sincerely,
