Hello!!
I am starting to apply for PhDs, but since I have never wrote an actual motivation letter before I am very nervous about it. I saw some very helpful posts in here, and I was wondering if someone could please take few mins to read the letter I wrote and provide a feedback.
Please keep in mind that in the application was specified that the letter had to be max 1 page!.
Thanking you in advance ![]()
Dear Dr. XX,
I am writing regarding the Ph.D. position in animal personality and sexual selection based at XX, as advised on XX website.
I have always been interested in animal behaviour and ecology, in the hows and whys of nature and its processes. Since young age I lived surrounded by animals, observing them and learning about their behaviour and interactions thanks to the works of Konrad Lorenz. My passion grew with time along with the desire to learn and know more, thus a path into ecological sciences was a natural choice.
I graduated cum laude from Università degli Studi di Palermo with a BSc in Biological Sciences. As an undergraduate, my passion in ecology and traveling was further fortified when I won the Erasmus Project in collaboration with the University of Salford. My bachelor thesis reviewed literature available on the genetic diversity in six species of felids and its practical application in wildlife conservation. This inspired me to continue with a MSc in Conservation Genetics at Manchester Metropolitan University. Here I could integrate the theory learned during the undergraduate with practical skills, such as refining my scientific writing, learning about R software and investigating population vital rates and cycles, as I did for my MSc final project.
Continuing my studies with a Ph.D. feels like a natural step allowing me not only to improve my knowledge and skills, but also to research and actively contribute to our understanding of ecology, animal behaviour and evolution. I am very keen on this Ph.D. position since it meets my research interests. I believe my background in population genetics and wildlife conservation will be applicable for this project, considering for example the role of sexual selection in speciation. The field work is another critical aspect. During the MSc I participated to a two-weeks field course in Tanzania, where we camped in protected areas, as the Serengeti National Park. This unique experience enhanced my curiosity and passion for wildlife and confirmed my will in pursuing a career as researcher.
My life experiences helped me developing many skills. Time management, creative problem-solver thinking and my adaptive nature allowed me to study while working and to culturally integrate in a foreign country.
I am an enthusiastic team player but I also work independently and successfully, as shown during university projects and my work experience, never afraid to go the extra mile.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my application. I believe I will be able to contribute to this research with all the skills and passion I posses. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
XX
