Motivation Letter for PhD

Hello everyone! I have been visiting this website for quite a long time now and it has been a great help to me. As I am writing a motivation letter for P.hD. application, I would like to get your comments on it. I will appreciate your help on my grammar or the content of the letter itself. Thanks in advance.

Dear Prof. AAA,
I am writing to express my interest in obtaining a PhD position in your group. Having recently completed my Masters in Electrical Power Engineering from XXX University, I am working as a research assistant at the university.

At early age, regular visits to local substations where one of my uncles was working, triggered my interest towards Electricity and its fundamentals. Soon it was clear to me that Electrical engineering is one such stream that deals with my interest. While doing my Bachelors in this stream, my curiosity grew towards new technological advances in this field, mainly High Voltage Direct Current systems and their applications. Furthermore, taking up an elective course on HVDC transmission systems during the final year has provided me with substantial knowledge of this domain.
During my Master’s degree, I grabbed multiple opportunities to work in the area of HVDC systems. To begin with, I chose to conduct my Master thesis project on hybrid AC/DC transmission lines, at the department of High Voltage Technology. There I gained in-depth knowledge about the modelling of HVDC systems and excelled at software tools like PSCAD and MATLAB/Simulink. I have worked especially on microscopic evaluation of methods that are used for calculation between AC and DC lines, which revealed important results regarding the accuracy of each method.

To further my knowledge, I took up an internship on application of HVDC systems in the field of renewables at ABC-Corporate Research Center in Germany. While working on the integration of wind farms to the electrical grid, I studied various converter topologies and gained experience mainly related to control system design for converters along with the modelling of wind turbine and MMC converters. My work here was well appreciated by the research team members and consequently, I was recommended for the ABC’s talent pool program.

Since past six months, I have been working as a research assistant at MIB institute. While developing a protection strategy for multi-terminal HVDC grid I have gained deep understanding about its various components. It has been an exciting opportunity until now which has provided me a great platform for directly participating in the research projects and to work with the Ph.D. students in equal responsibilities.

Having successfully completed the research so far, current goal of the project is to explore the possibility for modifying the hybrid breakers in order to make them compatible with our protection strategy. I believe that my learnings from a past project on the arc behavior in High Voltage breakers would come in handy during this phase of research.

Between 2009 and 2013, I have worked with ABC, mainly as a design engineer for control and protection of Low Voltage Plants. During this tenure, dealing with a wide range of products and handling the responsibilities for end to end project execution were a great part of my job which has helped me to increase my technical acumen along with analytical and problem solving skills.

While deputed at ABC-Singapore, I had the opportunity to work in a stimulating international environment. It was fascinating to meet new people and learn their cultures and customs. This experience made me more adaptable and flexible to work in new environments.

With my passion towards the HVDC systems, I would like to apply my resources to this field and make a significant contribution in it through a Ph.D. program. While working with research teams at MIB, I came across the research activities conducted by your group. It was quite insightful to learn about a very active research happening at the Eth’s high voltage laboratory in the area of HVDC. In this regard, I have read your paper on “xyz” which matches closely to my current work and interest. Nevertheless, I am also open to extend the horizons of my knowledge to new research areas. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you personally and discuss your research.

Thank you for your kind consideration. I look forward to meeting you.

Yours Sincerely,
Dave

Hi teechr,

Thank you for the reply.

"Having successfully completed the research so far": I meant the research written in the paragraph just above it. I tried to say that the research so far has been successful and for the next step I am going to do this (i.e. the things written in the same paragraph). Should I not make a separate paragraph?

dave59Should I not make a separate paragraph?
No, that's okay; I understand it now.
dave59"While deputed at ABC-Singapore": I should write a time period here. I will do that.
Yes, do.

Also, don't forget the other clarifications.

I'll correct the amended version.

Hi teechr,

That would be great. Here is the amended version.
