Dear Professors,
With my career objective of pioneering the field of molecular biology and cancer biology as a doctor of philosophy, I am applying for the esteemed Marie Sklodowska Curie PhD Fellowship for the doctoral position available in the Division of Molecular Genome Analysis, DKFZ.
My course of studies at Amity University (India) kindled my curiosity for the cellular and molecular complexities that shape the human body and their implications in diseases. With chronic diseases like cancer as the leading cause of death, I desire to elucidate the mechanisms behind the disease using animal models and to develop inexpensive and ground-breaking technology with the potential in disease modelling and therapeutics. This doctoral project position grants me an opportunity to pursue my interests and objectives at high-profile laboratories under distinguished faculties of DKFZ Helmholtz International Graduate School for Cancer Research and University of Heidelberg.
Besides an excellent academic background, I possess a strong research experience, which are congruent with requirements of this doctoral fellowship. I assimilated technical proficiency in molecular and microbiology from my summer internships, and one amid them focussed on the application of recombinant DNA technology for use in tracking infections in vivo. With my master's thesis, I chased my passion for innovation with the project involving novel small molecules rendering radioprotection and hematopoietic stem cell expansion approaches using Zebrafish as model organism. The research strengthened my skills in animal model handling including mice and Zebrafish, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry and live cell imaging which I believe will help me in pursuing my doctoral research. All these experiences sharpened my troubleshooting skills and ability to think critically.
Further, I was also engaged in intelligent reading and writing in the form of term papers during my studies. One of them which was highly acknowledged by my university faculty was a manuscript on micro RNA, which arose my inquisitiveness and fascination for RNA biology and post-transcriptional regulation of various genes of importance in physiology, along with their potential in disease diagnostics and therapeutics. I believe that small RNA molecules like siRNA and micro RNAs via RNA interference pathway can be useful in studying tumorigenesis and metastasis.
My recent industrial training programme, sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, has provided me exposure to work within a team of prospective students from diverse backgrounds. The industrial experience along with a workshop on industrialization of biotechnology has equipped me with knowledge of applying the technology for development and commercialization of potential product with the aim of improving human health. Post acquisition of my doctoral studies, I aspire to collaborate my research and skills sets with the business world in order to commercialize the technology and contribute towards the societal healthcare globally.
