Motivation letter for Ph.D

I am going to apply for a Ph.D position for which I need to write a motivation letter. As I am not from a English speaking country I seek suggestion for the improvement of my motivation latter, which I am gonna post here.

Dear Professor -----------------,

I am writing to apply for a PhD position under your research project titled -“-----------------------------------------------------------------------------” at the law faculty of ---------------,

My interest to apply for this research topic emanates from my earnest desire to work with the issues concerning the relation between national and international criminal law. The issue first attracted me when I was studying Code of Criminal procedure and Public International law as part of my LL.B (Hon`s) program at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Later on, as a practising lawyer my interest on the issue became accelerated. Indeed, the issue is so much integrated with of my own nation and the people of Bangladesh have been demanding to put under trial the “war criminals”, who were active collaborators of the “genocide” happened at the time of liberation war of Bangladesh. While governments planned to take initiative to do so the problem arose at the issue of application of perfect law. Thus, from the very earnest point of my national emotion I am keenly devoted to engage myself in deeper research on the issue.



However, I did my LL.B (Hon`s) and LL.M in the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh (Nobel laureate Dr. Md. Yunus used to teach here). After passing these programs I had taken part in Bar Vocational Course at the Legal education Institute of Bangladesh. Then I had passed the professional bar exam and got my enrollment at Dhaka District Judge Court in 2006. Indeed, criminal law was the focused part of my professional arena. I had engaged myself in reputed law chambers of Bangladesh.



However, in 2008 when I had been selected for a LL.M program at Stockholm University I decided to come to Sweden in view to have any opportunity of attending in PhD research program in Europe. However, at the time of developing my master thesis at Stockholm I had applied for a development related master program at Uppsala University and I have been accepted for that program. Now, I have been pursuing master program in Sustainable Development at Uppsala University, which I plan to finish by May, 2010. Meanwhile, at the same time I have been looking for any option of research program, which is essential for the development of the world as well as my own nation.



At this moment the opportunity of working as research assistant with the topic “Dealing with Divergence - National adjudication of international crimes” can really make an accelerated professional career for me and also help me to assist the Government of my nation to solve critical national issue. Besides these, my thirst of knowledge on the issue must be fulfilled with engaging myself with the research project.



I have experiences of doing two independent master thesis and some small projects as part of my previous studies, which has made me capable enough to carry on my Ph.D research.



Among the described projects I like both one and two. However, if I am asked to provide with choice I shall feel more interest on project no. 2 i.e. exploring the extent to which liability in international criminal law is sui generis.
