Motivation letter for Masters program

Hello everyone!

I am applying for a Master's program and I would appreciate some proofreading and review of my motivation letter. BTW I couldn't have written if it were not for the many advices I've read in this forum. So thank you all already!

Here is my last draft:

Dear Madam or Sir,

I wish to apply to the Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Evolutionary Biology (MEME). This degree would be a significant step towards my ambition to do relevant research as an evolutionary biologist.

My interest for evolution dates back to when my secondary school teacher presented me with Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene. Although I currently take a different position on its central thesis, by that time it was the brightest thing I had ever read. The logic behind Game Theory and Evolutionarily Stable Strategies immediately captivated me. As a result I was keen to learn more and took as many courses as possible on Evolutionary Biology during my undergraduate degree.

I am particularly enthusiastic about discussions on evolutionary theory. The class I took on Philosophy of Biology was definitely a milestone in my education. As a final assignment I chose to present a seminar on the book The Major Transitions in Evolution by Maynard-Smith and Szathmáry, which converged all the discussions we had on levels of selection, cooperation, development and sociocultural evolution. As of late I have grown an interest on mathematical approaches to evolutionary dynamics, and so next term I will be taking a course on Further Calculus.

Since the beginning of my academic life I have taken part in research on neurosciences, population genetics and molecular biology. Much of what I learned is of great value to my future career, such as fundamental molecular biology techniques, statistical analysis, usage of bioinformatics' tools and review of scientific literature. Moreover, seeking to maintain a good communication with supervisors and peers has proven very constructive.

I am applying for a Master's programme because I want to deepen my knowledge in Evolutionary Biology. MEME's list of published articles attests to its role in promoting relevant research and in training for a future academic career. Also, by experience I know how valuable an international learning environment can be. I am certain I would benefit from entering the programme. I am especially curious about the research that is conducted by the "Behavioural Ecology and Self-organization" group in Groningen. Also, I plan to take courses on Evolutionary Modelling and Advanced Population Genetics.

Thank you for offering this opportunity. I look forward to your acceptance.

Regards,

Artur Rego Costa
