Hello! I'm a civil engineer and I am applying for a master's course in the UK. I have written my motivation letter and I would be very greatful if you could revise it and tell me what you think. I believe it needs corrections but I'm stuck! How can I post it so that you can read it?

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in applying for the master’s programme in ………………..for the academic year 2013-2014.

Since November 2012 I hold a Diploma in Civil Engineering from ……………………………., with specialization in Structural Engineering. Even before my decision to study engineering I was fascinated by the built environment. Multi-storey buildings, skyscrapers and bridges were at the time a mystery for me. My curiosity on how those immense structures could actually ‘stand’ became later on an inspiration for choosing my field of study and a motivation to learn and complete my studies with good grades.

During the first 3 years of my 5-year course I had the opportunity to associate with all different aspects and directions in civil engineering before having to choose my specialization. After studying about the basic design and analysis principles of various structures, especially seismic, and realizing how intriguing and challenging these subjects were for me, I decided that it was what I wanted to get involved with, both educationally and professionally, and chose to continue my studies as a structural engineer. So, the last 2 years of my course I attended specialization courses that evolved around earthquake-resistant structure design, structural dynamics, various material structures as well as numerical analysis methods, that, due to the position of my country and the importance of building earthquake resistant structures, were the most important subjects. I studied the matter harder during my dissertation entitled: “Investigation of the efficiency of FRP jackets in retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete members with or without prior damage”, which was graded with 10(excellent), to ensure that I have the knowledge to pursue a good relevant master’s course and a career in the same area.

After finishing my education I realized that I want to take my knowledge and skills one step further so that I can become the best professional engineer I can be. My high professional ambitions led me to the conclusion that I need to specialize my expertise as a structural engineer by obtaining a master’s degree to be successful in the construction field on an international level. I knew what kind of course I was looking for and your university provides exactly that. I was really excited with the specific master’s course from the moment I read the title. Designing and analyzing structures subjected to extreme loading conditions is a step forward for me, which I believe will help me face the challenges that will appear on the field with confidence and success. I have already dealt with both static and earthquake loading on reinforced concrete structures through numerous papers for obtaining my diploma and have studied thoroughly the European and Greek regulations concerning them. I therefore believe I have the proper background to undertake this course successfully and give a “Greek” perspective of the subject to my fellow students.

Apart from the course itself, I am also encouraged to apply for the chance to study abroad. I took part in a workshop about green architecture in Belgrade last year and realized how important it is, for my way of thinking and collaborating with colleagues, to interact with people from different cultures. Since I want to be able to work internationally, studying a year abroad is the best thing for me to do. UK and London have always been my first choice because of the high level of education they offer and the great reputation of their Institutes. Especially your university was suggested to me by both my thesis supervisor, Dr…….., and one my professor and thesis examiner, Dr. ….…, who is currently teaching at your university, that I appreciate deeply.

Given my academic background, my overgrowing interest in structural engineering and my great excitement to enhance my knowledge and prove my abilities, I believe I can exceed your expectations and achieve excellent performance.
