Motivation Letter for Erasmus Studies 2011/12

Hi,

I'm Spanish and I'm going to apply for an Erasmus studies in Sweden. They ask me for a motivation letter and I've never made one before. I really apreciate if you could help me with this. I have a first draft an I would like that you comment it and tell me what's wrong or what's ok. I must send it before 3rd April, so if you could reply me before that date it will be fantastic.

Thanks a lot

Dear Sirs:

I am writing you to introduce myself and to apply for a course of five months, during the autumn term, at Chalmers University of Technology. My name is Daniel Asegurado, 22 years old, and currently finishing my studies of Telecommunications Engineering at the University Carlos III of Madrid. Next year will be my last year of degree and I think that it will be a really good opportunity to have the experience of studying in another country in a multicultural environment.

I have been living in Spain since I was child, but I always dreamed about living and working abroad, meet other cultures and learn languages. The Erasmus program seems like the perfect opportunity to make this happen, to try out other educational systems, to gain more independence and also to enrich my curriculum vitae to facilitate to get a job abroad in the future. And Sweden seems like the perfect place to live this experience. Previously, I have been in Scandinavia and then I fell in love with their lifestyle, their people and their places, cities with the latest technological advances in Europe but that retain the charm of small towns.

In the educational plane, the Chalmers University of Technology is, from my point of view and from the point of some teachers with whom I have spoken, one of the best European universities, and in addition is located in a major IT country. I believe that my education would benefit greatly from this since Spain in IT infrastructures and research still has a long way to go. Chalmers University is offering a wide range of courses that appears to be the perfect complement to my education, mainly focused on Applied IT and Computer Science and Technologies. It would enable me to develop a strong background of knowledge on areas still not available at my home university and that would prove invaluable throughout my career.

About me, I consider myself a hard working person and I believe that if you give me a chance to prove it, I will make the most of the experience. Since I started at university, I have sorted myself out to pay my degree, working hard at college and obtaining grants for my academic performance, through which I could finance my studies. Moreover, the interest in learning about new cultures, has led me to learn different languages ??like English or French, and possibly this summer I will start learning German.

I hope you consider me a worthy student to accept me in your university. It will be a privilege for me if you accept me as a part of your educational community. If you require any further information, feel free to contact me. I look forward to receive your reply.

Yours faithfully,

Well done neoka, I dont remember anymore how many statements of intent i've read tonight, but your's strikes me as the most sincere but not too informal letter. I find myself writing a similar letter for another scandinavian university. If I can give u any advise, it would be on the form rather the content of your letter.

  • Hence, think about leaving some space between paragraphs, it makes it more reader friendly, and I personally would start with "dear sirs" unless I was sure that all the people working in the departement are male, so I would have preferred "Dear Sir or Madam" in order to not cross any women reading your letter.
  • Good luck.
