Hi all,
I'm applying for an Msc and I'm kindly ask if you could review my letter of motivation. It's my first draft so it obviously needs some work. I really appreciate all your help.
Thank you.
I am very glad to be applying for the Master of Science programme in Civil Engineering for Risk Mitigation at Politecnico di Milano for the first semester of 2017. I am a proud Civil Engineer, with an emphasis in Project Management from EAFIT University. I am a very dedicated, disciplined and intellectual person, which allowed me to graduate with a 4.2/5 GPA, never having to repeat any of my courses.
Although I was born in Medellín, Colombia and my native language is Spanish, I also consider English to be one of my native languages, this because when I was 5 years old my parents took the amazing decision of moving to the United States where I lived 9 years of my childhood. This opportunity gave me many advantages in life. The first being; to have not one, but 2 native languages and second it taught me to learn, live and be educated by diverse cultures. This is one of the reasons I am very motivated to study in Italy and learn from its excellent professors from one of the most recognized institutions in Italy.
Everyone throughout their lives dream of traveling or living in some country around the world, for me that has always been Italy. A week ago, an opportunity was presented to my boyfriend to study his masters in Italy, and ever since I started to find an opportunity for myself to finally live where I have dreamt of my whole life, study what I love and to be close to the person that I see myself spending the rest of my life with. I started to search different MSc degrees for civil engineering in universities near Milan, investigating all the courses and its competences in different areas. I was recommended the Politecnico di Milano and I found that it is one of the top 5 universities in Italy according to the QS World University Rankings® 2018 There was no question that this is where I would want to obtain my masters of science degree, not only was it the best university in Italy but it offered a programme that had everything I was looking for.
Admission into this programme would be a step towards becoming a better and more educated civil engineer. It is a perfect addition to the knowledge I obtained in undergraduate school, where I have acquired strong principles of physics and mathematics for planning design, construction, and operation of infrastructure projects. I hope to learn and explore more in structural and non-structural fields, obtaining knowledge in mitigation of natural and anthropic hazards and risk management. This giving me the perfect tools and knowledge not to only design structures and infrastructures but to be able to evaluate their environmental impacts. I also hope to reinforce and perfect previous experience and education on how to plan, control and manage different civil engineering projects.
Considering my academic performance so far and my longing to enrich my knowledge in civil engineering, personal and professional experiences. As a determined and self-motivated person, I am confident that I will be an excellent addition to the university and the MSc programme.
