Letter of Motivation

I am sos a motivated student of Master of Science in Applied Geology (Option: Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology). I am grateful for this opportunity to introduce myself and to apply for a PhD research program in your University: Reconstruction xxxxxxx. With my educational background and research experience I believe that I am the suitable candidate for this position.
I grew up in southern part of Nigeria with a large mineral deposit and beautiful formations. This region suffered a lot of indiscriminate Mining activities and destroy of nature without a proper environment remediation plans. This lack of regard to nature prompted my interest in Geology as a course of study in the University. Although, this was against my parent wish for me to study medicine but I forged ahead with the mindset of becoming a Professor of environmental Geology. This will help me to educate teeming young population in the universities, advice my government on the environment and effective management of natural resources. Also, to conduct more research works on mineral resources and the environment.
In undergraduate days at x University in Nigeria, I joined the student chapter of the Nigeria Mining and Geoscience Society (NMGS) where I became an active member in the environmental sensitization scheme. During my final year research thesis, I worked on the “Stream Sediment Survey and Analysis of Igbasa Area. Southwestern, Nigeria.” This research was to determine the trace and major oxide in the stream around the environment and a distribution map of the element was made, since Igbasa and its environs is a limestone mining area.
I proceeded for a master’s degree program at y Univeristy in Nigeria to study Applied Geology (Research based). I finished first of my class and second best in the whole department. I am currently concluding on a research titled “Palynostratigraphy, Palynofacies and Thermal Maturation of X and Y wells, Niger Delta.” This research actually exposes me to the use many equipments and organization.
I had an internship program with Energy Solution, where I worked with the in house palynologist on the paleoenvironmental reconstruction, thermal maturity of the kerogen, the age of the sediment and present pollen and spore in the formation. The research has been interesting to me from the proposal stage to the concluding stage because of the wide scope of the research cutting across exploration and paleoenvironmental understanding. After the analysis stage, I moved to Brosman age where I worked with the in house geologist on the use of Strata Bug software in compilation of data. During my internship program, I made valuable contribution to the companies, like the effective use of Tyson method of palynofacies in paleoenvironmental reconstruction. In the evenings, I worked with Ministry of Health as volunteer health assistance in the primary health center. Where we help the health practitioner in arranging the patient accordingly, picking case files and recording their bio data. I have also involved in many field works and teaching during my training as undergraduate and postgraduate student.
I am deeply convinced that all these spheres has made me a better researcher and motivated me to gun for the highest degree in your citadel of learning. The understanding of this fact and my strong aspiration to becoming highly qualified researcher of international level led me to a decision to apply for the position at your University, as University of z has a strong reputation in research.
After I read carefully the description of the PhD program and course requirements, I believe that it perfectly matches my research interests and profile. I have continued my research at the University website, where I gained useful information about the University campus and the student life in Stockholm. I believe that I will be positive addition to your team.
As I understand, this program is very competitive, attracting highly motivated students, but l am convinced that my good record at the University and during my work as a researcher give me a strong recommendation for a place at it. I would be honoured if been selected for the position.
