Motivation Letter!!

In a few days, I have to send in a motivation letter to UCU.
I was wondering if anyone could check on mine.

Dear Ms Legless,

It is with great enthusiasm that I write this letter of motivation. For when I found out about UCU, I was truly baffled, for several reasons.

But first, I’ll introduce myself. My name is Joe Bertoe, and I’m planning to graduate at ‘College’, a grammar school in Ohio, in June. I enjoy expressing myself, and watching others express themselves. Acting, debating, speeching and teaching are all things I enjoy doing: I took part in the ‘’national youth debate,’’ and the BBC public speaking awards, I have co-organised 2 plays and I have been coaching younger pupils in several subjects at my school. Some fields of studies I’m particulary interested in are the human mind and the way society is arranged. This is because I enjoy analysing things, such as human behaviour and history. A broad interest is found back in my current profile: I combined the profiles nature and health and nature and technology with History and social science.

But why do I think UCU is the right place for me to go? I went to countless universities, in search of the one study that suited me most. But as I tried tons of exceedingly interesting studies, I was always somehow put off of by something. No matter how appealing the subjects were and no matter how great the atmosphere was, I was always left with an empty feeling; as if something was missing. I now realise what was.
It came to me while listening to an innocent advertisement of UCU. Although the message was blatantly obvious, I could not help but feel inspired by the philosophy it portrayed:
‘’a complex world requires complex solutions. To understand global warming, you need the sciences, but you can’t fully grasp it without politics, economics, anthropology, or even ethics.’’
This approach fits me completely: I have never liked the idea of having to limit myself to the views of one single field of study, as I prefer a multi-disciplinary approach. Of course depth is also important, but I think things get truly interesting, when combining different subjects. As a result, I have a very broad intellectual orientation and curiosity. I think this aspect of me fits the philosophy of UCU perfectly.

Another aspect of UCU I like is its international character. One year ago, I took part in an international program at our school. This was one of the best experiences of my life, and I now have a very close group of friends inItaly. I enjoy meeting people from different cultures, as I think the exchange of different cultures is a very enlightening experience, and hilarious at times. I’m also very comfortable with the English language. My current English grade is an 8.6, and at times I even catch myself thinking in English. As such, I would very much fit in the international environment of UCU.

Given my social engagement, my broad intellectual orientation and curiosity and my love for an international environment, I am confident I would fit at University College Utrecht.
