Hello to all! I am going to apply for a master's scholarship and need to have a very good motivation letter. I would really appreciate if you could review my letter and point out its weaknesses. Thanks a lot! Larissa PS: My letter seems long compared to the other ones I observed in this forum. But the School's website stated that the letter may be maximum of 2 pages long.
Dear Mr. ***
Ever since my adolescence, I have been excited about urban matters. I believe that cities are so interesting and full of connections and movements that they consist in a very attractive field of study.
In 2003 I enrolled the Geography graduation course at the ***. This field of study offered a wide range of subjects that filled my hunger for the social aspects of urban problems. In 2006 I transfered my Geography course to the ***, at the ***. I finished graduation this year at that school, getting a bachelor degree. At *** I chose some optional disciplines in the urban context, such as “Social Geography”, “Urban Space, Segregation and Urbanism at the Antropological Perspective”, “Introduction to the Study of Urbanization in the Third World”. The Department of Geography at *** has a very strong Urban Geography theory line. But in the other hand, there isn´t a strong practical use of the theory learned in class. I missed being taught about the practical uses of geography, especially in the context of urban planning. Therefore I realized I need to fill in this lack by a post-graduation course that values the newest and most efficient tools of urban planning. I believe that the Urban Development and International Cooperation master course offered by *** program from 2009-2011 is perfectly suits my study interests.
My graduation research was about the reationships of green spaces in the urban area. One of my main concerns in the research was to study the implantation of the scarce green public spaces in the city of Sao Paulo throughout the 20th century, period in which the city rapidly grew, and the relationship of green public spaces and the surge of slums. This is because many of the slums in this city were developed in public areas destined to the implantation of green spaces, but which remained unoccupied for decades.
I learned that this master course is focused on urban development and international coperation for cities in countries of the South and East. In Brazil, my country of origin, there is a growing interest in the subject of city development based on new legislations that oblige each city to establish their own urban plan and new legislation of their own. The Ministry of Cities was created by the Government to take care of that area in the capital city Brasilia in 2000.
Although urban matters are really important as a field of study and application, it does not have a solid tradition in most of the Brazilian cities. It feels like the solid base is being constructed right at this moment. And in the academic envronment, Urban Planning doesn’t have graduation courses, only a few scattered post-graduation courses, that are focused on the theory of urban planning, not on the technical of practical issues of the subject.
My work experience started in 2006 when I got an internship at ***, where my main activity was to use GIS tools to update the digital mapping street bases of the cities that composes Sao Paulo Metropolitan area. The maps were used in many public policy researches carried by that institute. My next internship was at a public institution called ***, a state foundation of data analisys. My job was mapping demographic information in the Metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. My third internship was at ***, the Municipal Office of Planning. I worked in the department of cartography and data analisys, with professionals such as geographers, sociologists, economists, architects, statistics. My main activities there envolved manipulation of data and the creation of maps. Also I was invited to participate in the meetings, conferences, seminars about city issues. In this internship, which lasted 18 months, I got in contact with many new information on the urban planning routine and how it is being developed in the city of Sao Paulo. The Municipal Office of Planning is a place where I felt completely satisfied.
In all my work experiences, especially in the last one, I learned to work in group, do the work I was expected to do, getting my co-workers respect. I learned a lot in that environment, always taking the chance to learn more with my experienced co-workers.
I believe that my most important qualities are being responsible, decidided, punctual, and interested. When I start a new job, or a new course, I do it, without getting desistimulated. If I decide that I want to do something, live something new, I go for it, and don´t give up in the first difficulty I get. I try to look foward, to the result.
When I was fifteen years old I participated of a high school exchange program in the United States. I stayed in the program for the period of 10 months, attending high school in a little town called Dawn, in Missouri state, living with an North-american family. This truly was one of the greatest experiences of my life.
My main goal as a professional is to work at the urban planning and development, in the public sector. I believe that a job in this area would satisfy my interest in the urban subject and fulfill my desire of having a job dedicated to help society.
To be able to hold such a great job I want to concentrate my studies in Urban Planning. The Geography graduation course gave me a solid comprehension about the relationship between space and society. Some disciplines were really important to build a deeper point of view over urban matters, natural resources, and how the groups of society relate to each other. Now I want to focus on one subject only: Urban Planning. This has been my main interest since high school, but there aren’t graduation courses specialized in this subject. I believe that the post gradutation is where I will be able to deposit all my strengh and energy over a subject I am passionate about. Having the base learned in graduation, I feel ready to focus my study on Urban Planning.
