I have just started the clinical stage this year and I think it’s the right moment to take part in a clerkship. The subjects I have already studied during these years are 00Microbiology, General Pathology, Anaesthesia, General P00harmacology, General 00Pathological Anatomy, Fundamentals of Surgery, Radiology and Immunology, along with all the preclinical subjects.02br

00 00Medical education at my University 00is rather theoretical and students haven't got many opportunities to practise their knowledge. That is one of the main reasons that encourage me to apply for this elective. This clerkship offers me the opportunity to get closely in touch with patients and improve my theoretical, but specially, practical medical knowledge.02br

00 00Surgery is, without a doubt, my preferred branch, since I find it the most dynamic medical field: you may treat patients during the pre and postoperatory, but also have the incredible experience of working in an operation theatre, where every operation is singular, although the procedure is the same. In fact, I am seriously considering the idea of specializing in Surgery after I qualify as a Medical Doctor. 02br

00 00Even though my current surgical knowledge is limited to basics, it might be 00appropriate to mention that I 00have already gained more than average experience in this field working weekly for the last two years with a Surgeon (General&00 00Gastroenterology) in a 00. Because of that, I am 00reasonably familiar with operation theatre work00, performing frequently as surgeon assistant or scrub nurse (surgical technologist). 02br

00 00I am keenly interested in acquiring more theoretical knowledge and practical skills in this area. I would hope to being given the opportunity to learn a great deal from clinical staff , helping with history taking and physical examination, being present at rounds and at different medical procedures, and being able to take part in operations as further as possible.02br

00 00This elective is not only an opportunity to learn more about medical education and health care systems in other countries, and to experience other methods of hospital organisation and provision of medical care, but also a chance to integrate myself in a new culture for a while and, of course, practice my English.
