Motivation for traineeship

Do you think it is appropriate to talk about your childhood/background when writing your motivation letter for a job?
I also want to be able to stand out in front of thousands of other applicants for this job. Thanka a bunch for your help.
Here's how it starts:

When I was eight, my father bought me a laminated map of the world large enough to nearly cover the right side of my bedroom wall. My father, a Vietnam veteran, taught me the names and the geographical locations of all the countries pictured on that map. Growing up, my fascination with the distant lands mapped out so colorfully on my wall intensified from just purely make-believe stories of exploration and adventure. I continued to ask questions about the foreign places and the people in those places, took numerous, rigorous classes that indulged my desire to know more about these diverse cultures, and continued to learn as many foreign languages as I could. When I came to XXX, I chose to devote my studies to foreign affairs and global issues by majoring in international affairs.

My formal education focused on geographic politics and the systematic relationship that exist between social, economic, and political variables around the world. Because concepts of territoriality have always been an interest of mine, I was particularly drawn to a course I took on international relations in the EU. The course gave me a chance take a look at the history of the EU and the continuing changes and challenges Europe is facing today with issues of integration and expansion. The idea that 27 different countries with 23 different languages could move together in the same direction, with the same purpose towards understanding and cooperation left a profound impression on me as I have been keenly interested in the EU affairs ever since.
