Motif / Leitmotif

Leitmotif:
[count] : something (such as a short piece of music, an idea, or a phrase) that is repeated many times throughout an opera, book, story, etc.

Motif:
[count] 1 : something (such as an important idea or subject) that is repeated throughout a book, story, etc.

Can the two words be used interchangeably - at least in the above sense?

SuperESL Can the two words be used interchangeably - at least in the above sense? In most cases, yes, but I would not use "leitmotif" for a repeated motif in the visual arts, for example, a repeated motif in wallpaper — not 'leitmotif'. CJ

In most cases, yes, but I would not use "leitmotif" for a repeated motif in the visual arts, for example, a repeated motif in wallpaper — not 'leitmotif'.
