Mother's day vs mothers day

This might sound stupid, so sorry...English is not my native language. Anyway how is the " 's" in "mother's day" called? Is it an article or something else (i am trying to google it and i don't know how lol) and what is the correct form for using it? i saw different forms such as "students' loan". Is that correct? or should it be "student's loan"? thanks!
