Mother

Please take a look at the following two statements:

1. Mary saw her mother standing there.
2. Mary saw Mother standing there.

In composition writing, I believe students have to use a capital 'M' for a statement (2). Am I right? How do we explain this rule?

In any writing, a proper name should be capitalized. In #2, the child's name for her mother is 'Mother'.
