Most/the most - use of the quantifiers

Dear teachers! I think I read somewhere the rule prescribing to add the when most refers to part of a group. Could you please tell me why the first one is correct/more correct according to my teaching program?

1. Most of the students of our group live nearby.

2.The most students of our group live nearby.

Please point out every mistake in my post.

Thank you for your time!

Aaron
