Most vs The most

Hello!
I am confused about the usage of "most" and "the most".
Lest's take this sentence for example:

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

I know the sentence is correct but that is only because it sounds right. I cannot explain why we should use "most" instead of "the most" in this particular case. I was wondering if anyone could explain the difference between the usage of the two in detail. By the way, English is my second language so please be elaborate if you can.
Thank you!

djolec I cannot explain why we should use "most" instead of "the most" in this particular case You may use either, though I suspect that simply 'most' is more common.
