Most people or most of the people

#1 Most people are afraid of getting infected with swine flu these days.

Is this correct to use "most people"? OR it should be replaced with "most of the people". I don't see any difference.


#2 The standard of living of the working class is higher ................................................

A. than that of thirty years ago

B. than what it was thirty year ago. (Book answer)

which one is suitable answer here? I think both is correct. I have seen uses of sentence A structure (The people of Delhi are more educated than those of Uttarakhand.)
