most

Hello,

Both the girls were most careful with books, and they were never forgetful about returning them.

This is a sentence from a book.

I have one question here - why "the" has not been used before " most careful"?

Thanks.

In this context, most means "very", it isn't comparing them with anyone else. " then the meaning would be that they are more careful than anyone else.

I would begin the sentence "Both of the girls..."

If the sentence read "...were the most careful..." then the meaning would be that they are more careful than anyone else.
