In order to allow the teachers to attend morning service, volunteers are needed. Volunteers are rotated on a monthly basis. If you would are able to serve one Sunday a month for just one hour, contact Tina Burns.

Does service mean a religious ceremony? Why not "a morning service"?

service
[countable] a religious ceremony
- morning/evening service
- to hold/attend a service
- a funeral/marriage/memorial, etc. service

Is service really a countable noun? The first example doesn't have "a," but the third does. May I ask why?

Top answer

-- Most probably, yes. - Because it is used uncountably here; if the countable version were used (and it easily could be), it would read 'attend morning services', since they happen every week. - Yes, or uncountable.

  • Many nouns can be either, and they are not all indicated as such in the dictionaries.

If the uncountable version were used, it would read 'attend morning service', since they happen when?
