Moreover, what is more

Hi!

Is there any difference between moreover and what is more? Recently a friend told me that there is but she didn't remember what that was.

Hi, Generally speaking, both moreover and what is more can be used interchangeably in the vast majority of contexts. Both imply an additional point to what had been previously said. However, moreover is somewhat formal, and is, therefore, used in writing rather than speech.

  • In practice, I assume only few people might detect slight differences between the two in a given sentence, if any.
