More the opposite vs more of the opposite

Which one is correct English?

1. While it could have been a hostile situation, it was more the opposite.

2. While it could have been a hostile situation, it was more of the opposite.

It seems like they're all correct English but the meaning of each sentence seems to be slightly different.

As far as your specific question is concerned, only (1) sounds right to me. There's another problem, though, which is that the sentence seems to contradict itself. I would prefer something like: While it could have become a hostile situation, in fact it turned out to be more the opposite.
