More than one participle phrase in a sentence O.K.?

Hi. Could we have more than one what I think is a participle phrase (functioning as an adverbial phrase?) in a sentence?

He carried the ball toward the goal post, trying to make a goal, thinking it would be the team's best chance to win the game.

Sometimes I feel that we can link (not sure it is correct, though) what I think are participle phrases with the conjunction "and." Do you think it is correct?

He carried the ball toward the goal post, trying to make a goal and thinking it would be the team's best chance to win the game.

The second is better than the first for standard writing; the first is rather literary.
