Is "more recently" more distant from now than "recently" or is the opposite true?

The opposite eg I called Tom on Feb 12. I called Mary on Feb 18. This means I called Mary more recently than I called Tom.

eg
I called Tom on Feb 12.
I called Mary on Feb 18.

This means I called Mary more recently than I called Tom.
