1. How are they different?

Are you able to do your homework?

Are you be able to do your homework?

2. In regard to the underlined part, the only interpretation as the use of the article "the" in the part indicated is that there is only one table in a restaurant (not a specific restaurant) and it is on it?

1-- The grammar is wrong in the second sentence: you cannot have are...be.

2-- No, not necessarily: all restaurants have tables, as we know (this serves as previous mention, or a general truth). It could mean one of the tables (that we know are) in (any) Chinese restaurant.

Is there any reason why you did not put an article before the phrase "previous mention" but did place an article before "general truth"?

I don't think serve is that special, but I think we often have the option of countable vs uncountable (e.g. one professor among many vs. in a position of professorship).

I think in this sentence,"professor" means his position(rank) among all the teachers

Maybe when the word means a kind of career(teacher), you could add "a" before it.
