It doesn't sound quite right to me. It's rather cumbersome.

Why not say simply 'They study more or less eight hours a week'?

Thanks for your answer. By the way grammatically speaking "more or less" in this sentence isn't wrong? Wouldn't the correct be" They study about eight hours a week?

Hi,

About 8 hours, around 8 hours, roughly 8 hours would certainly all be more commonly said.
